Festool Domino 500

Good find!Coincidentally, just saw this. Looks promising at half the cost. I’d hate to add another battery system to my shop. I also wonder if other manufacturers are going to make their version and drive the cost down.
The competition will benefit us consumers.
Could it go the way of the track-saw with everyone and their brother making their own version?

So far the Domino has patent protection preventing a close copy design. There are lots of alternatives, for many joints a plunge router will do essentially the same thing, for instance. But no alternative I have seen gives the combination of speed and accuracy of the domino or for nearly as many uses. I think it is a "nice to have" but also a very useful tool.

I did as well if it proves to be anywhere close to the domino it will be a boon for the hobbyist.

I read that some of the patents on the Festool D500 had expired a while back, but there are patents on some of the Festool Domino improvements that are still in effect. How that would impact a copy-cat D500 is anyone's guess. I have never had a problem with Kreg tools, though they tend to have a lot of plastic parts. But that never stopped them from functioning well. When you look at it, the D500 is not a mysterious tool. It should not be difficult for any reputable tool manufacturer to make one. Considering Festool's price premium, it would not be hard to undercut the price of the D500 or D700 substantially. After Festool bought Sawstop, I expect the price of their saws to go up by about 300%. But they didn't.
Well, the domino is pretty complex. Is it $1-2000 complex? Eh, probably realistically not, and I think one of the best things about it is it doesn't demand being accurate to 0.000001" for good results, but despite plenty of excellent sanders existing festool still sells a lot of rotexes.
That said I generally like Kreg products, but it'll have to be well made. $500 isn't nothing, and battery instead of corded? Honestly I think that's an odd decision for a tool that you absolutely HAVE to use a vacuum with. It's not like a tracksaw where if i'm using it outside I don't bother- forego dust/chip collection with a domino and you break bits or leave stuffed mortises.
I'm not going to be surprised if festool buries the Kreggomino in lawsuits.
However, even better (for me)- domino stock might become even cheaper. I have the bits to make my own, but sometimes I just grab some pre-made ones.

From what I've read, the Domino patents are expiring in June. As for the battery issue, Kreg has added chip ejection ports, claiming you don't need dust extractor hookup for "short" usage periods and that the ejection ports improve collection when connected to an extractor. I'm still not a fan of more battery ecosystems but if the performance really is comparable without chip collection I see the incentive for Kreg to push their batteries.

Best tool in the shop! Another great improvement are the 3d printed imperial plastic depth gauge replacements from Amazon. I prefer metric but this is this and my Festool track saw are the only metric tools. It was less expensive to convert these two with cheap Amazon knock off replacements.
