Hey All, I got an insert in my Modern Woodworking magazine yesterday from this outfit, FastCaps. They primarily market to larger manufacturers, but some of the products look like they would be available to independents, too.

I really like this tape measure, which lays perfectly flat on the work surface, and allows notes to be scribbled on it, so it can be used like a story pole.

I bought the FLatback 16' tape in February at Woodcraft and really enjoy using it. It works much much better than a standard tape measure in shop woodoworking. It would not work good in general carpentry work because you can't extend the tape out and have it stay stiff to hook over the end of a board. I even like the onboard pencil sharpener (saves a lot of step to the pencil sharpener). I was surprised at the price. Usually you don't get a good tape measure for the price of the Flatback but it is well made and the pencil sharpener will put a really sharp point on a pencil.

Last year, I built a curved desk at Banks Kerr YMCA. The flat back tape was the cat's meow for laying out pieces. Be sure and buy one of their belt clips for tapes-$0.99, yes-less than a buck. Most if not all of their products were originally designed by craftsmen working in the field.

no, In August, when I go home (time for 20th reunion!) again, that plane, some other hand tools, and a few smaller power tools will be migrating south with me.

Be sure and buy one of their belt clips for tapes-$0.99, yes-less than a buck....

At their booth at the Greensboro Woodworking Expo last month, they were giving these belt clips aways as customer frrebies and I got one -- it is very handy for carrying a tape measure (I used to tear belts up with mine) and it has an integral pencil sharpener, too. Very handy gadget to have!
