Not sure if this belongs in finishing or "off topic"
I have a student who is building a sculpture welded out of repurposed metal parts.
Some of the parts are raw some have a finish from their previous life.

I'm trying to determine what finish we can apply that will preserve it from the elements but not hide the "patina" of the various parts.

Spraying is an option but not the first choice.
The finished work will be displayed outdoors in an unprotected environment.

Would any of the water based lacquers or urethanes be appropriate for this application?

Thanks for your help!

Best thing I found for metal is acrylic automotive finishes. Some can be brushed with the proper additives.

Take to your local paint supplier.

I think Mike is on target with the automotive finish route. I've seen some classic cars that owners wanted to preserve in their current state so they just removed any loose pieces of rust and clear coated the car to keep the surface rust and patina. That would probably be your best bet.

Another vote for automotive clear coat. Easiest to apply by spraying. It is available as a water-borne product.
