Thanks Greg. It is windy here today, too cold to lug stuff outside. But I do have six 18"x24" panels of 1/2 plywood handy. So I will be make myself a pair of those vise jaws in the 1" flavor. Now, if I can just decide whether I cut the pieces to length then glue, or glue then cut to size? I will probably go with the former. Cheers.
