Dogwood Bowl

Dogwood bowl with an integrated pedestal. The wood came from a dying tree I took out of my yard a few years ago. I lost track of how much time I spent sanding and cleaning out bug tracks.

This is the first time I’ve done a pedestal this way. The piece is just under eight inches at its widest. It’s finished with Danish oil.

Comments and feedback welcome.

Mike, There is a turning contest for the month of December! It costs nothing to enter and you already have pics uploaded! You never know, your piece just might be the winner!!! Here's the link to the contest to make it that much easier for you ->

BTW, I love this piece! All the holes add so much character! Great job!

Yep, that’s a beautiful piece and is definitely worth entering into this months contest.

Very cool design. I have a couple pieces of dogwood (ant infested) someone recently gave me to work with. By chance did you take a picture of the raw piece before you started shaping it? I love to see how pieces like this are "born".

Sorry, I don't have a picture.

We took that tree down because it had a lot of insect damage and was just about dead. I still have several pieces of wood from that tree. Really hard wood.

FWIW, YouTube has some raw log to finished bowl videos. Try Richard Raffan.

Yes, Richard Raffan is the best! I find those videos of his where he breaks down raw wood showing his decision process on what to then make out of them fascinating...and educational :)
