Can you check one out at the BORG? Hard to tell by just looking. Need to see if there's any play in the bearings and check run out with a small drill bit. Spin by hand and see if it runs true. Nothing bent and all parts there. Then you really can't expect perfection in a cheap tool.

I'll do that Mike. Thanks for the input.

Take a look at the most recent FWW. There is a review of drill presses (benchtop) and a reference to their previous review of floor models. May get some helpfull info.

If you are considering buying the Rigid from the ad, I'd take a dial and test indicator with me to check for runout and table/drill perdicular alignment.

Cheers,
Bernhard

Thanks Bernhard. I'll pick up a FWW today. Unfortunately I don't have a dial or test indicator. :-(

You can test for runout with a small block of wood and a sheet of paper.

Most paper is 0.004", so thats a simple feeler guage.

Try to clamp if possible, the block to the table on the right hand side as you are facing it.

Set the corner of the block against the chuck or shaft and rotate the shaft several revolutions.

Now, while rotating the shaft, try to insert the paper between the wood and the chuck/shaft. Odds are you will find a gap.

You can fold the paper in 1/2 to get 0.008 etc etc.

One tip, hold the block on the right hand side as you are facing the chuck/shaft and rotate it in its normal direction (right to left).

I learned right quick if you spin the chuck/shaft into the block, it sucks that piece of paper in and enduces cuss'n.

Sometime back I read a discussion of what I think was that model and as I recall it was given good reviews. I've 2 other pieces of Rigid equipment (13 in planer and osc. belt sander) and they are both good.

Thanks for the info guys. The owner of the drill press has not responded, but the ad says it's only been used once. Of course I'm not sure I believe that, but it could be true.

Don't let that phrase worry you, I recently puchased some swamp land in florida that was used just once.

From the pictures, it looks brand new!

;-p

Drill presses are pretty much a generic item. Brand isn't as important as in some other tools. This DP should last you a lifetime. DP's being generic, means most any jig or fixture you make for this one can be used on another.

Thanks Bruce. I think the press may be sold. The guy hasn't responded to phone calls or email. :-(

So, doesn't that mean she has to buy a NEW one now??

Chuck

There is a very good chance of that. I looked at the 16" Rikon at WC today. It looks like a pretty good DP for $229. Anybody have one of these?
