Mainly because of their light weight, I do most day-to-day measuring with a caliper like this:

Sometimes the pinion will slip on the rack which disturbs the needle position. Small slippages can be corrected by turning the face. But, if zero gets too far off usage becomes quite clumsy. Turns out this is quite easy to fix.

1. Rotate the face back to its original position.
2. Gently pry the case open starting at this point.

3. Rotate the pinion to align the needle with 0.

4. Be sure to close the caliper and then carefully snap the case together.
5. Tweak the zero setting if needed.
