So I lucked into a free 24" Scroll Saw awhile back and haven't put it to good use yet. I tried about a year ago but couldn't get the blades to lock on the bottom because the blocks were worn out. I figured out how to flip the blocks yesterday and now have the bottom snug and put the blade in the slot at the top. Fired it up and watched the blade flop around because the top portion isn't going up and down with the blade. I scratched my head and looked at it for awhile but I can't figure it out. I'm gonna search the web for a manual or write-up, but I thought some of you guys might know what I'm doing wrong off the top of your head.

Thanks for your help.

Maybe that's why it was free :lol::lol:

There should be a link between the upper and lower arms. Just take the cover off and look around. Probably a simple fix. Shouldn't be to hard to find a parts manual. What's the model number?

It's a model 1440 s/n 93-2907. I'll take some photos and post. I didn't see a tensioner there is a knob on top but where the blade goes at the top nothing to grab hold of it perhaps I'm missing a part?

Also I definitely didnt' see a coupler of any kind.

thanks for the help.

That model number (1440) seems to be a lathe.
Is this what you have?

This is a schematic of what I've got. I think it's a idiot operator error on my part. I'll tinker with it again when i get time. I also found an operator guide for an earlier model. I think the balde is supposed to go up into the top assembly and the screw at the top tighten down on the blade which I didn't know before or do so I'll try that.

Thanks for help.

This scroll saw operates much like my old Craftsman SS. The main shaft (part #117) has an eccentric that moves the lower block up and down and the upper plunger has a strong spring (part #10) that pulls the blade back up. When putting in a blade, feed the upper blade into the upper block and leave loose until the lower end is secured in the lower block (mine uses an Allen wrench). Then rotate the pulley to bring the lower block to the top of its movement and pull down slightly on the upper plunger/block as you secure the blade. This puts tension into the blade and it should work fine.
