I don't know much about this picture but that's got to be the longest portable wooden ladder I've ever seen. Men were men back then!

That extension ladder is equipped with "tormentor poles" - gives the ladder lateral stabilization and assists in raising and lowering the ladder. 35' and 45' are the most often encountered but LAFD had theirs made to be 50'. In early days there were some even longer before ladder apparatus were common, being wood few are still around in museums and on antique apparatus. The most common were made by the Bangor Ladder Company in Bangor maine and the name Bangor ladder is often applied to any extension ladder with tormentor poles. The longest I've worked with was 45' and it got squirrely enough for me.
