This is a project just finished using 2 by 8's that allowed me to try some different things. The general design is at least somewhat Moroccan (specifically the keyhole arch). I also included a two tone color scheme over a scorched grain surface. Since I had some very small scrap pieces, I included some lacewood trim features (inlayed) into the arches. Nice work, Mark. Can you comment a bit on the pegs?
The pegs have no purpose except to add a decorative element. Moroccan woodwork is very ornate with many geometric carved patterns that I simply cannot duplicate with my limited skill level or tooling. I was trying to add an element of suble texture by adding the pegs. The same holds true for scorching the grain. So I was attempting to move it more toward an authentic piece, and break up some of the flat surfaces at the same time. Thanks for asking.
