Finally finished my first real piece of work that was not for the shop. Took almost 2 years :embaresse but I get about 2 days a month where I can actually devote time to this and usually its trying to figure where I left off, hehe. :icon_scra

Made it out of ash as its a cheap hardwood and I figured it would be good to practice on. Top two "drawers" flip open and bottom two slide out. Top is a piece of corian type material I scored after cold calling all over the triad and triangle area. My parents basically eat in front of the TV and requested a top that would allow them to put hot plates and mugs on and that would take a spill or too without requiring too much maintenance. Almost went the tile route but I just didn't have the time to get a top done all in one day.

Learned alot of what not to do this round and things I probably should have done before applying glue to certain parts. Adding finish to something really does wonders in showing me where I needed to do more sanding.

I used a minwax gel stain over wood conditioner. Something I probably won't do again. :eusa_doh:I was hoping to lessen the grain contrast some and from what I could see, Two coats of gel to darken the piece wasn't going to happen. First coat went on great, but getting additional coats on evenly was nearly impossible. :BangHead: So, basically its got one coat of stain and 3-4 layers of poly on top.

Overall, I'm real pleased with how it turned out and looking forward to my next 2 year project. Also happy as a clam that I get to sprinkle smily faces everywhere. :icon_chee

Steve, I like it. I love working with ash as it works well and is easy on the tools. I like how the grain flows on the drawer fronts and the use of the corian top. Great job, your parents will be proud to tell people who made it.

Steve, great looking piece. I like the flip-down top drawers, gives a lot of shelf space. How did you secure the top to the base?

thanks, the guy who made the top for me said to use silicon adhesive. I was told to not use screws as it would crack the top.

Siliicon didnt seem like a very strong adhesive but I used quite abit and its being held over a very large area. I really wish the guy had more scraps I woulda snagged some for other pieces for later.

2 years not bad
I'm that long (actually a bit over) in the PLANNING of my daughter's chest. Sending her pictures and getting no reply.... Asking her what she wants and getting she's working on it as a reply....... sigh
Finally got some firm ideas from her (the one my sister has suddenly is perfect) and now waiting to find the perfect wood (doesn't matter as long as its cedar lined). I got a plan in the works for that.
(Ahem...... JEFF you ARE still coming to the pig pickin????????:gar-Bi)

Great looking piece. Love ash. (loml asks if there's any wood I DON'T love I guess not lol)
I wouldn't have thought of the corian. sounds like a good choice for the application.
