I know I know this is a little late - but I have seen this posted http://marleyturned.com/id126.htm and watched it several times and for the life of me I can not figure out what size he is using - I would like to look for the wood through out the year - maybe I will be able to get a lathe this year:wink_smil

Blank size really doesn't matter as long as your "Xmas" tree is in proportion. I would guess that he starts with a 2½-3" square blank for the body (based on a general TS cutting depth) and a 1-1½" square for the tree.
Starting with a larger blank will just make more of a mess on the floor.
