Steve, beats the heck out of me. The only type of chisels I have are dull and duller.

Actually, I have a nice set of Marple chisel I received as a gift and they work well and hold a nice sharp edge. I would also be interested in seeing a description for each of the chisel types you mentioned.

BTW..........in case you haven't heard it lately, thanks for the great job you and the other moderators are doing keeping this website up and running. I can't imagine the amount of time you must pour into it. Even though I have only been a member a short while now I find myself returning to the site over and over again to catch up on the latest posts. I have also exchanged some good ideas and info with other members. I appreciate all your hard work and efforts.

Thanks Jonz, that's a great link and provided a definition and photos of each type of chisel Steve asked about. I guess my Marples fall in the category of bench chisels.

Yes most of the marples I've seen would be in the bench category. Bench chisels are what most people think in their head when they think "chisel".

That's a great link! It just tripled my kowledge of chisels. I was disappointed to find out that the craftsman chisels that I got from my well intending parents for Christmas last year aren't as good as I had hoped...or are they? They're carbon steel and I believe that he was bashing the chromed ones?

I've never owned any Craftsman chisels myself so I have no experience with them at all, but they are not high on most people's lists. With most of these companies that have been making tools for a long time, older ones are considered better, but even then Craftsman chisels are not normally highly sought after.

That being said, IMO a set of chisels that you are not afraid to bang on and nick the edges of is an essential part of the shop. I have some antique whitherby, stanley and greenlee's, along with a hirsch set that I keep shaving sharp for hand work, but I have a set of Irwin's that althought sharp, I'll bang on, scrape glue, anything I need to do.

I saw those Craftsmen the other day and they looked pretty good to this wood butcher. Very stout

Thanks for the link, a little tool porn always helps :-D, and I might have learned something too.

Chris,
I think he was talking about chrome-vanadium steel rather than chrome coating. I don't know much about steel, but I would suspect that it may not be the same thing as the carbon steel (or HSS) we typically expect in hand tools.
