No sure if this has a name other than carving... :) But I'm trying to learn some techniques for doing larger designs in hardwoods.

The closest I've seen to what I have in mind is chip carving, but what I'm wanting to do is too deep and large, and in hardwoods, so chip carving isn't practical... however the designs are what I want.

Here are a few examples of carvings I'm trying to mimic or would like to learn the technique for..

I especially like the pattern in this one which I've seen smaller in chip carving

Love this one as well...

Ok, So I'm just looking for some advice on learning the techniques for doing these types of carvings, and also what tools would get me started. I've got a V gouge and a curved gouge and some chisels... but so far I've just cut lines..

Books I've looked at so far cover more figure carving or work on a smaller scale.

Thanks for the idea... funny what seems so obvious that you just dont think about until someone else mentions it.

There is a carvers club in CLT. :) I'll be checking them out soon.

:swoon:there is a guy at the woodcraft in Matthews that could most likely help you with this. I'm not sure when he works but he is a carver.
