Thought I might post a couple pre-finishing pics of a Cherry Glove Table I am building. Saw one in a gallery and have tried to make something similar. Its 41.5x15x35. Think of trying a gel stain. Never used gel before.
I second the finding of tight joints and drawer fronts. Wow, that is a fine looking piece of furniture! I like the proportions/symmetry a lot. Of course, I love working with cherry.
I can't comment on the gel stain...never went there.
Keep the pics coming, I love it when a plan comes together. :-D
Beautiful table George. Walnut and cherry are my woods of choice and your table just proves how rich cherry can be. Let us all know how the gel finish comes out. I haven't used it either. For my 2 cents, your can't go wrong no matter what finish you put on cherry. I like the recessed drawers. I haven't used that design yet.
Nice work! Make sure you use a general finishes gel stain, or something comprabable. DO NOT use minwax gel stain unless you have had good luck with it before. Just my 2 cents.
Beautiful table. Beautiful proportions. Very nicely done. Gel stain should help control any splotch that you sometimes get with cherry. I'm not sure what brand is the best (I'm not experienced enough) but I would use the same brand for stain and top coat unless you have some experience with the different products on the wood type you're finishing. (Maybe that's just superstition... but it seems to work for me.)
George, thanks for posting those pics. Not only is a beautiful table in progress, you just gave me a great view of how you did the drawer runners. I am working on a table similar to that, only one drawer, and have been debating how to make the drawer support system. How did you join the drawer runners to the aprons?
Beautiful table, I look forward to the finished pics :eusa_clap

Great looking table, George. Everything looks to fit really nicely. I can't help with the gel stain either, but with a table looking like that, it has to come out beautifully.
Let me clarify my gel stain experiences. I have never used Minwax gel stain. i just finished a project using gel stain, and talked to a number of people. It seemed like the general consensus was either general finishes or another brand I can't remember the name (Woodguy may be able to chime in though). It seems that everyone has had sporadic luck with the minwax gel stains splotching. I wasn't trying to bash any product....I was just speaking from my limited experience and some of the others who have been through the finishing trials. I ended up with a great look using general finishes stain on maple, hopefully someone else can provide insight on what to use with cherry.
Your table looks great. Post any findings you have once you finish it.
The top is fastened with oak [L's] in routed slots in the aprons. The drawer runners are made of ash and I use sliding dovetails to attach. Little extra work but holds aprons secure and doesn't allow any seperation. Drawers are cherry also. Have made this table before out of 100 year old pine. Try to attach picture.
The table looks great! My .02 cents worth says to never stain cherry. One or two coats of oil of choice (I use danish oil) let dry at least a week and then a coat of wax or if you need durability a coat or two of GF arm-r-seal (oil and urathane mix) Then let the cherry get darker and more beautiful over time.
I too really like the legs. Great choice on the degree of taper! The drawers do seem to fit extremely well. I have a tendency to agree with Tom in that just an oil finish would enhance that cherry and let it darken nicely over time.
... and let's see those dovetails! Looks great. I've wanted to build that sort of Shaker/hall/end table for a while. I really like the lines and dimensions. I'll side with Toolferone, et al. and say try oiling it up instead of staining. Sit it in a sunny foyer and watch it "age".
