Chris Mathes has made this request: link

I sent him a PM asking him to specify exactly what he wants his new ID to be... when he responds I can make the change. I told him I would send an email to him when it is done, since his login info to the site will be changed.

I can see where to do this in the admin CP... I can pull up his ID and save the changes. Looks like it can be done while preserving his other info. I expect that I will also need to rename his gallery, and re-specify him as moderator of his gallery.

Before I do it, I want to make sure there are no other settings that need to be changed, in order to do this right. Any pitfalls I should look out for?

No, I'll let you change it, because I didn't post a response in his request, which I should have done and you did.

I believe the system will also change his gallery, but check that before you leave Admin CP. (e.g., I know that Splinter used to be dlane something). My PM to him was to be sure he wanted Villa versus Vila like the real "Bob Vila". I don't know that I'd want to be named after him... I'll let you know if I get a PM back, too. I suggest you close his original Thread, too.

Ok, I got lost, if he wanted it done and if so was anything thing done.

Process

Search for current user record in admincp-> Users, search for user.Change only the user name. and save.

admincp->Maintenance->update counters-> update user names
admincp->vBa Gallery->Maintenance->update usernames

At this point everything is down, posts, gallery owner, moderator, etc..

The only thing left is the name of the album. This is just a text string and really has no meaning other than to make it easier for the Human to find the album. The naming is just a convention I established.

BTW, for future reference. If the request is in a thread, point the person to other links-> Request Other Service. Otherwise, think of what happened to Photo Galleries the other day, but even worse, because then their is NO way to coordinate.

Again, If you are sent a PM point them to the link.
Thanks

OK I've got a question... why can't we just use a field called "display name", that's separate from the login ID? Many people may want to use a "login ID" that they're used to typing (same as e-mail, same as work login, etc), but the name that gets displayed may not be what they want to show... does that make sense? People can change it to what they want, whenever they want, no involvement from the admins needed.

There is a place in the "joining" process to list a screen name. Are you asking for one that can be edited by the user?

YES! Most of the forums I have been on have an allowance for this... you specify what you want for a "login ID" and then you specify your "screen name". [whispering] ... as an example, if you're a member of Woodnet, take a look at your user control panel, you'll see what I mean ... [/whispering]

The "login ID" is what you type, along with your password, each time you login. As we have seen on this forum, this is frequently some variation of the person's name or other info - first/last/MI/dob/ssn/who knows what else. If that's what the person wants displayed, then the "screen name" would default to that. If they want a different screen name, they can specify it.

This would solve two problems - users have control over their own screen name (not have to "request another service"), and people can change their screen name without having to change their login info.

It's a great idea, but the feature is not in Vbulletin. It would probably take a lot of code to be written, Database changes, etc. In other words another week from away from the shop:lol:

But, of course, now I'm now intrigued. I'll look at it and see if it can be done without the code drifting away from the standard code base so far that that we wouldn't be able to use future updates from jelsoft.

I didn't see any comments there on compatibility with the gallery... :eusa_thin probably do-able, but the issue is uncommon enough that it's probably not worth it
