FYI... For anybody that may be interested (cathy?) the coasters finished with 4 coats of "ceramithane" have been is use now for a week and have stood up nicely to hot coffee cups, cold, wet glasses, wine spills etc with no ill effects.

More intensive research shows that a metal tea pot just filled with boiling water placed on the surface each morning for a week, will leave a faint ring on the surface.

Wow, nice work, David. When you challenged your hypothesis in this experiment, I assume you used a control? I just need to understand the reliability of your findings.

I had another coaster right next to the tea pot as my "control" this did not have a ring on it at the end of the week, other than placing the tea pot onto the coaster the environmental conditions were the same - QED - the hot teapot was causing the ring. I rest my case Sir. I was concerned that this was a manifestation of the "corn circle" phenomenom, but my control coaster suggests not.
