Re: Ahoy There!

Hi

My name is Craig. I live in Greensboro and have been working w/ hand woodcarving for about 7 years now. I got started after retirement by looking for clubs in this area and met people that way. I've enjoyed the club and shows. It's a great hobby and a dying one unless more people take up the craft. My son also started wood carving-actually before I did and has quite a bit of natural talent. I on the other hand, have to work at it.
Good luck and happy carving!

Re: Ahoy There!

Welcome aboard, Duke -- Now that's a catchy name -- happens to be the country's best basketball team right now -- GO DUKE!! -- sorry, I digressed -- I'm a fellow retiree, and former sailor and marine researcher who now lives in the mountains pursuing woodworking and other fun things that you can only do on days that end in "Y"... You'll find this site to be a mecca of good people sharing ideas, experiences and project photos. Some of the finest woodworking I've ever seen has been by carvers, so do all you can to save this important art form -- and lots of our guys have scrap for sale (or to give away) for you to get your Dremel into!!!

Re: Ahoy There!

Duke, that is quite a intro there. Sounds like you have been living life to its fullest.:icon_thum Welcome aboard and we are glad you found us. The only experience I have with any sort of carving is from a couple of years ago while I was staying in a hotel up in Indy for about a month. With no access to any sort of WW'ing tools I was going nuts. So what better cure than to swing by the local Woodcraft and Rockler stores and pick up a few carving tools and a couple of books. Carving figure heads out of those little wooden eggs can be a lot of fun. Not sure what is was, but shortly after I started carving in the hotel room the maids didn't seem to be as friendly as they were when I first got there.

I look forward to reading your posts and seeing pictures of any projects you elect to try your hand at.

Welcome, I will ditto what Clay said. My wife's grandfather was a great carver, and I am always amazed at the realism in his carvings. He did lots of birds and other animals. What is your favorite thing to carve?
Dave:)

Craig, welcome aboard. Like Steve said, your intro must have been lost in another thread posted by Duke. The first two replies above from me and McRabbet are actually from that other thread.

So, having explained all that......Welcome. As you can see from my other post above I have very limited experience at carving but I really enjoyed it when I tried it and wouldn't mind doing it again. Please post some photos of your work, I am always amazed and the works of art that folks can carve and would love to see some of your carvings.
