Here's a few pics of the red oak captains bed, I made for one of my teen age sons a few months ago.

Nice work! However, with all those drawers in the way, how does he cram stuff under the bed for the "quick clean"?

Great looking captain's bed Jeff.:icon_thum I like the drawers you added to the end of the bed in addition to the ones on the side.

That is a great looking bed you got there. Tons of storage fit into a neat design. I'd hate to be the one to have to move it someday. Looks solid, like it weighs a ton!

Nice piece of work. Did you happen to keep the pattern? I see that bed as a great addition to a guest room. You don't need additional pieces for storage. That bed is self contained. Beautiful wood and beautiful finish. A hundred years from now someone will be looking for a date and name. Did you think of that?

Nice job Jeff! I really like the design. Never seen one with drawers on the end before. I do like it.

Excellent work, Jeff.

Must weigh a ton and be solid as a rock!!!!!The finish looks great, and with all of that storage, who would need a matching chest of drawers!

Thanks everyone for your replies and to answer some of the questions...

Matt - Quick clean - yeah right this is a teen age boy were talking about :-?. I initially was going to raise the frame up off the floor and put a radius on the bottom of the footboard, but I thought about it and figured it would be sturdier with the frame on the floor.

PappaJ - it's 4 coats of clear gloss oil based poly urethane, sprayed with my paint gun, rubbed out with 00 steal wool in-between each coat. No sealer, toner or stain.

cpowell – Your right, it is pretty heavy, the headboard posts are laminated 3" x 8" and the footboard 3" x 3". It comes apart pretty easy by taking out 8 - 3/8" x 6 lag bolts, 4 on the head board, 4 on the foot board. That’s what 1" button plugs on the foot board are hiding. This bed was made from a tree that fell on the side of the road near Henderson, NC. I nabbed 2 8’ logs, took them to my saw mill buddy and dried the boards out in my shop.

lwhughes149 - I'm sorry, I didn't have a pattern or plan. This is one of those make it up as you go along things. I had a picture in my head of how I wanted it to look. I measured the twin mattress and built it around the mattress dimensions and tried to keep it as symmetrical as possible. I really didn't think about putting a date on it, that's a really great idea, thanks :icon_thum .

Thanks everyone for your time and comments, I'm glad you find it interesting. There's a lot of storage in a small space, it's what I envisioned the captain of a boat would need.

Hi everyone, I was wondering if you may have any suggestions to help me "jazz" this bed up a bit? Beside the tesla coils seen in the headboard

I have a request to make another captians bed, for a friend's teenager. I'm not charging anything to build it, so I can change things up a bit.

I was limited to a 4' tall headboard in the one that's pictured, due to a built in shelf above the bed. But was thinking I would build the next one with a 5 or 6 foot tall headboard, dentil and crown molding around the top and flushing the side drawers into the frame. I like the foot board design, but feel the frame and headboard could use some jazzing' forsure. Also, I would like to stay with 1" thick red oak stock.

Thanks for your help!

Maybe somehow integrating some of the black like you have from your handles into it. I see what you mean. The headboard seems a bit "boxy".

I am by no means a design expert and have the "boxy" syndrome at times myself. I am thinking out loud so bear with me and what I say that you comment on helps me in the future as well.

I am wondering if it would look less "boxy" if you had left the face frame off of the headboard? Although the frame is nice, does it add to the boxy appearance? Maybe on the top rail of the face frame if it is something that you wanted to have to have some curves in it?

I am not sure that adding doors or drawers would help. I think adding some contrasting wood like the handles for decorative effect might, but not sure.

What kind of doors or drawers you thinking about adding? Maybe arched/cathedral doors or something with a bit of curve or molding to it?

It is very boxy, I was thinking bookcase headboard when I built it. I like the idea of arched doors (one on each side) with black handles, where the shelves are and maybe some dentil moulding around the top. Perhaps something like this? Even though I'm not sure the arches are in correct relation to each other and the drawing stinks.

That looks pretty good Jeff. I like the idea of the arched doors on the either side of the open book case.
