I had a slab of 8/4 mahogany left over from a bar project and had a friends wedding plus my wedding anniversary to make gifts for. I chose to make a somewhat traditional candle box. I added a flame maple sliding lid to liven things up a bit.

There were a few firsts for me with this project: Resawing by hand; half blind dovetails; and chip carving.

I took quite a few photos throughout the project. I hope it is not overkill.

Nice work! Was this a 100% hand tool project? (It looked like it from the pictures). Of course, it really doesn't matter, the project came out great either way. Don't ever worry about too many pictures, the more the better. :)

Forgot to ask a question on the resaw. Did you use a kerfing saw to set the plank thickness?

How long did it take to rip that plank in two the hard way?

Mark: I used a 5 1/2 PPI rip saw. I did not use a kerfing saw. I just scribed a line on all 4 edges. I started much the way you would start a tenon. Saw on both corners and then in the middle. I periodically flipped the board around to counter any drift. When I worked straight through without stopping it took me about 10 minutes to complete resawing one board. As you can imagine, when I had my helper monkey "helping" me it took me a bit longer.

No such thing as too many pictures around here...

Nice work, especially the half-blinds - they look nice and tight!

I have to admit that there were more than a couple gaps when I was done cutting them that I needed to fix after the glue up.

Filling the gaps on the sides of the tails wasn't so bad. I cut some thin wedges with a chisel to fit the gaps, glued them in and planed them flush.

The tricky part on one of the sides I had a gap on the leading edge of the tail. If I used the same type of wedges I would have ended up with end grain that didn't line up right. In that case I had to cut wedges that were oriented with edge grain on the narrow ends. This made for very fragile wedges and it took me numerous tries before I was able to successfully produce the wedges I need and get them glued and tapped into the gap without breaking them.
