Hi folks! The LOML says I have to put down the skews and gouges and make some built-ins for the living room. I reckon I should, since I told her I was buying all those saws, pocket hole jigs, etc. just for this purpose :confused_. Anyway, since she knows how to use SketchUp, here's a couple of different ideas she has on the design. Any comments on the design, how to get started, what to beware of, materials, etc., would be appreciated.

BTW, isn't there a program out there that estimates how much wood I'll need?

Thanks,
Bob

My sincere condolences, Brother! :gar-Bi

MAN, I wouldn't know where to begin, but, there's a bunch of folks on here who will.

Download the trial version of CutList and it'll tell you what you need to know material wise.

GOOD LUCK, and keep us posted.

Cool Bob! I like the one with the corner cab (for the tv?) Pretty straight forward construction. I'll see if I can add some comments later.

Thanks guys! Cut List... that's it. This will be quite the learning experience for me. I wonder how many sheets of plywood will go in the "learning" pile :help:.

You got that right Jeff!

Mark... the perspective is a little tweaked on the left view. It actually has the same spacing around the the fireplace. Does it look too tight?

Bob,
Just looking at how far out the base cabinet protrudes. A 2ft base will be exposed to a fair amount of radiant energy that close to a fireplace. Check with the building inspector as I'm sure there is a spec on this.

you do not want bases that deep next to the fireplace. i remember a house we were flipping in durham and the previous owner had built ins put in, much like the ones on the left.
before we even started demo, the not so friendly building inspector pinked us for that. it wasnt even our work. we were allowed to cut them down to the same depth as the top shelves. in our case it was around 10 inches deep. i honestly dont remember how much clearance we had to have on the side of the fireplace. i know there are some guidelines for them to follow. there has to be since most mantels and surrounds are wood and do in fact sit in front of the firebox.

I use the program Cabinet Planner. This program provides cut lists for the boxes and face frames. You can download a free trial version. The program is pretty simple but it works.

Thanks David... I'll track that one down :icon_thum
