I'm seeing a few these lately.

I (at age 3:cool: pay (cut & pasted)

I just composed a reply to a mg and I can dupe it there but not here. (38)

It's a shortcut to get that smiley 8) if it was typed ( 38 ) it wouldn't do it, but when typed (38) is does :)

Since this smiley was retired, I'll change the character map. The new code will be :-8 and then the ). There appears to be some caching, so it may take a bit to show up.

To follow up what Phillip and Bas said....

Its the never ending battle between :qleft7: emoticons and smilies. :qright5:

Emoticons are when you see/use the keyboard characters such as ; - ) vs :wink:

The system has a few emoticons cross referenced to smilies.

Its a catch 22 as some of the common character based emoticons do nicely become smilies. :dontknow:

The other option was to ban people from the site that are 38 years old, so they can't accidentally type (38). It was a close second :)
