Fellow ww friend of mine is building some computer furniture. He bought some of that great red oak plywood from Lowe's. I was helping him cut it to size this week when I saw these "white lines" running through the wood. :confused_

Glue joints!! And you know how well glue takes stain & finish. The sheet was also bowed, but we worked around that. :BangHead:

So, where do you find the "good stuff" nowadays??

:dontknow:

Cabinet suppliers and/or hardwood stores.

Wurth Group/Raleigh Hardwoods
Steve Wall (so so)
Hardwood Store
Jackson Lumber

Those are a few that I know of although I have not bought any wood from Jackson lumber.

To all the above posters, Wal-Mart is the cheapest place to get an eye exam and glasses. BORG, meaning HD isn't where this plywood is. Look at the color of the handle of the cart in background. Looks blue to me, so must be LOWES As for hardwood plywood, HD carries some that is made by Columbia Forrest Products at their plant in Old Fort NC. Same price as the junk at Lowes, but still a "shop grade". HD also carries that Asian stuff in some stores, along with maple from Columbia Forrest Products.

Speaking of BORG plywood, what exactly is "Sandeply"? I've bought a sheet or two from the Apex HD, and the face seems no harder than balsa--it flakes and chips with a fingernail.

The Lowe's across the road sometimes has BB, but it is EXPENSIVE! Can anybody recommend a better source in the area?

Bruce, do you own stock in HD? BORG has become a generic internet term referring to large retail giants. What difference does it make where it is or who made it, that plywood is still crap!!!!

Sandeply, as the name implies, is plywood that's real easy to sand through the face :) It's similar to the Blondewood plywood you can get at Lowe's (although the latter isn't quite as bad).

I've had good luck recently with the oak plywood at the Apex HD. No voids, nice grain. Not cheap at $50/ sheet though, but not terrible either. The birch plywood was not quite as good, but not too bad to work with. But neither comes close to 'real' hardwoord plywood.

I thought it was Big Orange Retail Giant. But, then it doesn't make sense to call Lowe's the Blue BORG, since it would be the Blue Big Orange Retail Giant. What does that yield, fuchsia? (big Milwaukee beer can just dropped on my head - I should have said purple).

Of course, the plural of Borg is...Borg. Not Borgs or Borgen.

(yeah, yeah: Bork bork bork bork :))

Thanks for the chuckle!
That stuff does look like you could make something cylindrical out of it.

if you need good plywood in the western part of the state, I'd recommend Gennett Lumber. Good people and a product that vaguely resembles the stuff from the other places (that shall go unnamed:gar-Bi) except it will be useable for flat work
what do ya do? its like wallyworld. as a whole I hate 'em. I just can't afford NOT to use 'em.
BAS yellow and blue make green orange and blue make $$
as for the plural you may be right with borgen it looks like bargain til you get to the fine print:rotflm:
