Great workshop - full day. Mike (pop-pop) did a great job with excellent instructions and better design. Almost all vises were completed - aging bodies and a drill press that would not hold alignment held us back a tad - yet a very full and productive day. And so nice to get out from under the COVID rock.
Here is the proof

Great workshop. Good food and nice getting together again without all the covid horsepucky. BTW I forgot to put my handle on. It's on the bench behind the hammer. Throw it in the truck please. I'll get it next week.

It was great to spend time with others in the shop! It was a terrific workshop and my vise turned out great! It will be a well used addition to my work shop! Thanks again to Mike for engineering this thing and a big thanks to Phil for hosting! As always the accommodations were outstanding and the food was out of this world! Although I believe Fred supplied the ribs? So thanks to you too Fred!

I had a great time seeing everyone. Thanks to Mike for all his work on this project. Thanks to Phil for facilitating this event, and thanks to his boss for the ribs. A few finishing touches and this vise will be a great addition to my shop. Thanks to everyone who participated in a fun day.

Great workshop as always at Phil's. Mike aka pop-pop did an outstanding job instructing and a yeoman's job preparing and metalwork. Thanks to both! Now I just have to disassemble for the umpteenth time to get rid of the bbq grease and put a finish on it.

Thanks for the compliments and although preparing was a lot of work, it was worth it.

To make assembly easier, I should have countersunk the pivot holes in the X-cross arms and filed a larger chamfer on the stainless pivot pins.

I am looking forward to seeing photos of your vises when a finish gets applied.

Thanks to Mike and Phil for an outstanding workshop. As mentioned above, the food was a bonus. Now I have to finish assembling my vise here at home. Will post photos eventually.

This was the first post COVID workshop and it was great on several levels. Great to get back and fellowship with fellow woodworkers, great food, and a great project. I completed mine this morning in my shop and have already put it to good use. Thanks to Mike (Pop-Pop) and Phil for all of their efforts - a considerable amount of work went into putting this together; your work is greatly appreciated.

At the workshop, I was asked if I did any woodworking beside vises. At our older son’s house in Carrboro I took a few photos of previous work.

I had not realized until the workshop that using a high vise changed the ways that I work.

When helping a participant during the workshop, they were usually working on a bench top often needing a third hand. I noted that my knee jerk was to clamp the work in the closest high vise before doing anything. As the participants start using their vises, it will be interesting to see if clamping work in a high vise becomes second nature for them also. Maybe Phil can comment on his usage.

For me, even something as simple as a stropping block automatically goes into a high vise.

I finally had enough time to rap this little fellow up. I love it, I shaped the handle in it and it held extremely well with no slipping. Thanks for the donation of the Padauk from Phil. It was like working with a bag of Cheetos, everything turned orange. But against the old White oak it looks sharpe. Thanks again for a great workshop and hope the next one is even better.

When will there be another bench top criss-cross vise workshop?

Certainly no time soon, I’m “vised out” for the time being. Phil is busy with his home remodel and I need to catch up on several postponed home projects.

I am working on publishing the engineering drawings and assembly sequence that were used in the workshop in the Resources area on this site.
