Band saw tire exploded

Well, maybe exploded is a bit of hyperbole, but it did fly apart while I was using the saw, and some of the pieces hit my left hand. It stung, but it was only a minor injury. No contact with the blade.

It was the lower tire on a 12 year-old 18" Jet, and the tires were original. The weird thing is that the rubber is still very pliable. It just started cracking, apparently.

I was in the middle of a cut and there was a sudden clanging, then a couple of pieces of tire came flying out of the upper housing next to the blade and hit my left hand. I thought it was the upper tire until I opened the cabinet.

I've ordered urethane replacements. They should be here Monday.

Did not think rubber would do that, I get a few years before they explode.

I've had the tires go bad due to age and use, but never had a serious blowout. Glad you didn't get hurt. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Robin!

I had a Delta 14" actually labeled Rockwell from late 60's or early 70s and tires went bad. They did not explode or break up but stretched and ran off the wheel. That made a hell of a racket.
