Back at it....FINALLY

This has been a long time coming. It has been a WIP for a couple years. When I made the one as a donation to NCWW I fully intended to make one for myself. TBT the one donated to NCWW I was actually making for me. Long story short motivated by Donn's recent project and the passing on an intarsia friend and coach I focused and completed my second eagle. Woods used are Walnut, Holly and yellowheart. I have a couple other intarsia projects in the works that I hope to focus on completing soon. Wish me luck.

Nice work Scott. Inspiring. I recall the 1st one too - that's impressive with my power of recall (or lack thereof!).

So just to be clear... (since I'm easily confused!) - these are scrollsaw cut pieces (or CNC?) that you have carved on the surface? Looks like you have multiple pieces that make up a wing, and that several of these are carved to show individual feathers. Or is each feather an individual piece?

No CNC in my shop. As you correctly thought it was cut on a scroll saw and you are correct that the wings are made up of multiple pieces and “carved”. The shaping is accomplished with sanding sleeves mounted in the bench grinder. While some of the carved effects are done with a burr mounted in a Dremel the bulk of it is accomplished with a “wonder wheel”. It is a fiber wheel mounted on a bench grinder.

Scott, you are the master! Beautifully done! Having worked on the same eagle I can more fully appreciate the excellence of your craftsmanship. (As a side note, I tried using a wonder wheel but found that it seemed to easily scorch; you don't seem to have that issue).

Thanks Donn. Yes, the wonder wheel can be problematic especially with some woods. But then again sometimes you really want to burn.
