I thought I would get the Gearbox attached to the main shaft today but it wasn't to be! Getting the housing and gears to fit onto the shaft has been anything but pleasant. The tolerances are pretty tight and a keyway that is blind has caused me to have to take it on and off several times.
A puller is needed to remove the gearbox from the shaft and the puller has goofed up my paint job. I know it is a piece of machinery and not a show car but I'm going to have to pull out the gun and do some touchup to be happy.
A part of the gearbox was never taken apart because it wasn't necessary. It may have to be removed and reassembled in pieces to the shaft to eliminate the hidden keyway. If thats the case, it is going to be difficult task. The gear that has to be removed is attached with a fastener that I tried initially to remove unsuccessfully. (one of the reasons for leaving it alone in the first place.)
Well, we will see what tomorrow brings! Gene

Yes, I love restoring this saw! I finally got the gearbox attached today. Now I have to find the correct lubricant for it before I can button the box up. In the old literature that I have, it either calls for "light" grease or SL-5, whatever that was in those days. One knowledgable person has recommended straight 140 wt gear oil. I only need about 2 pints and I can't find the 140 wt in anything but 5 gal cans. Later, Gene

Try a Marine supply store or auto supply. Usually marine supply stores carry heavy gear lube in 1 qt plastic squeeze bottles for transfer cases and lower units of boat motors.
