Any experience with Bug hotels?

Good afternoon. I'm trying to help my kid refine their Eagle Scout project idea and I'm trying to think of ways to extend the life of the bug hotels they are building to limit any upkeep for the nature center they will be placed. I was thinking that yakisugi/shou Sugi ban in the exterior surfaces as a preservation method might be interesting. It'll largely be open in the front and back, but if we can ensure that they last more than a few years I'd like to see what my options are. Other options we're exploring are milk paints.
