Any Experience Turning Dogwood

Had to remove a Dogwood tree as part of the grading for one of my projects.

Anyone have experience turning Dogwood and what I might anticipate.

Someone gave me a small piece, it turns great. I made a large carving mallet and it was fairly easy to turn, was very smooth, and takes a beating without shredding the grain.

I second this...It can be beautiful wood! These are older pics (sorry about the quality) of some dogwood pens I turned.

I have quite a bit of Dog Wood. Yes. It can be a beautiful wood. It's a very hard wood so keep your gouges sharp.

Since it’s dogwood, be sure to turn some bench dogs from the scraps.

It turns and work great. Very hard and makes great mallets and mauls.

Dogwood doesn't splinter as it wears so any handle on a mallet is going to develop a very smooth almost polished finish.

I have mallets and tool handles turned from dogwood. Dogwood is a lightweight durable wood that with friction develops a very slick surface and is also known as shuttle wood. In the days before composite material it was used to make powered loom shuttles. Makes a great mallet for striking wood especially dogwood end grain tool handles, not so good for side grain striking steel or wood.
