Another wood report from BORG

Went to the BORG today - Red oak lumber has went up .25 a BF since my last visit. The following is current prices as of today, for lumber 1x6-8 anything above 6" wide jumps about .75 cents a BF irregardless of length.

* Plain / flat sawn KD S4S FAS / Select Red Oak $5.25 a BF
* Plain / flat sawn KD S4S FAS / Select Poplar $4.25 a BF
* Plain / flat sawn KD15 S4S #2 Pine $1.25 a BF

Pine was marked #1 but I would really have to dig for a #1 board, most of it was #2 - meaning it had been cheery picked many times over...

My thoughts are pine supply must be abundant because the price remains unchanged since my last visit on March 30th 2008. There is still a good market for Red oak and the demand must be a little higher (hence the price increase) I was utterly shocked at both Poplar and Red oak prices. Poplar at $4.25 a BF and Red Oak at $5.25 a BF is utterly ridicules. Remember now this is for plain/flat sawn lumber - we are not talking quarter sawn here. WOW who pays that kind of price for poplar and red oak? Somebody must be buying it because they sell it for that much - WOW - if only I could sell poplar and red oak for that much. I could retire and buy some beach front property in Hawaii.

Well what do you expect, people have got to buy there lumber from somewhere that's reasonably close to them...... After all nobody does KD runs around here anymore.:rotflm:

Kidding aside, the prices have to go up because of shipping (gas) prices.

You will have to raise your prices or go out of business, and we donot want to see that. These gas prices are killing everyone. If WC has a one day sale and I can save $15 -20 I don't go because it costs that much in gas. I just wait until I'm up in the area and buy it then, money wise it's a wash. And without a sale, they'll probably have what I want in stock:lol:.

A few things to consider.

People go there to buy one board for a small project, the store has to keep wood in stock all year with probably a small turnover. The cost of inventory is high.

Many other products turnover much faster and have a higher profit per square foot of floor space.

This is kiln dried and surfaced four sides. More labor and more waste.

This wood has been through several middle men thus a small profit at each stop on the way to the consumer.

It's not the only thing they sell, so overhead is spread out across many other more profitable items.

They are there to make a buck, not to provide a friendly, helpful service. They don't care if you like the price, somebody else will.

I know this cranks you up, but Thursday my survey stake guys brought me 80bf of hand selected, S4S poplar. I gave them Grant + Hamilton (actually, I gave them 3 Andy Jacksons). They smiled ear to ear 'cause I paid them double their price. I asked 'em the current price. Still $390/MBF. (note: for those of you who watch CNN, the M is thousand, not million. A million is MM. At least on CNBC.)

Item 2. Watching a recent AxeMen, it seems the sawmills are not buying. At least, they're not buying that stuff that grows on the left coast. So if there's no demand by the sawmills for the raw material, why aren't lumber prices dropping? ( Oh, please, don't hijack this into an economic thread, and blame AlGore or GBush, because the only thing that affects pricing LONG TERM is the FREE MARKET). The question was actually somewhat rhetorical.

Actually, lumber companies have been doing this for decades. When building markets hit a slump they will shut down selective mills to avoid oversupply & hold up the price. They know if they continue to produce, the lumber yards & railcars will be full before they know it & then they'll have to cut prices to move the stuff.

Is there a NC candidate offering to increase tax? I only recall two presidential candidates who are willing to help the impoverished.

By the way, I bought a sheet of the BORG version of Baltic Birch 3/4" plywood a week ago. Ply's are nice and thin, but it does have voids. Not bad at $37.50 though.

I too have gotten some nice plywood ( some even void free) from the Orange BORG, the blue place by me never seems to have any decent wood though.

Im standing in mine right now and 1x6x6 pine is marked down to 4.00 a piece. Normally 11.34 a board. So if anyone needs some decent swp for some projects, then go check them out. Oak and poplar are pretty pricey here right now for some reason.

A 1x6-6 is 3 BF at $4.00 that's approx $1.33 a BF. If it we're normally $11.34 that's $3.78 a BF! Man that pine must have gold streaks in it, that's one of the highest prices I've seen for pine in a while. Usually a price like thats is for ultra wide pine, like 16" wide and above...
