Job from an antique store. Leg was broken long ago and repaired. Hyde glue either poorly done or decayed over time. Since this is not a joint that will need to be taken apart later in life I will use Titebond. Cleaned all the old glue, it chipped away very easily and left a relatively smooth clean surface.
I think the old glue just got brittle and failed.
Still cleaning...
Glued and clamped. There is a layer of plaster that will be reapplied and then painted gold.
The joint is not glue starved, I stayed away from the edges about 1/8 inch all around to avoid excess run out. The void will be filled when the plaster is applied.
Debating over add a couple stainless steal screws to reinforce the joint. I believe the joint will hold and the wood is very old, a little punky, and the screws could weaken it so probably will leave as is.
