It's 5 coats of satin spar varnish with a little bit of mahogany/walnut stain mixed in. Sanded with 400 grit by hand before the last coat. It's not quite as dark as the base but I want to see the grain. I think it was originally sprayed with some type of catalyst varnish because the finish was very hard to scrape off and had a strong yellow cast. It didn't dissolve with alcohol or laquer thinner.
A day between coats and a couple days after the last. The added oil base stain slows it a bit.
Yes, the rest of it is over 95% original and looks fine. I touched up a couple small scratch spots.
