Ahoy There!

I am Duke and I live out in the woods along South Creek, near Aurora, NC. Bought this place 2 years ago after living on my boats for over 10 years and cruising the North Atlantic, the Caribbean, and the Gulf. Still can’t get used to having so much room and finally, I have the room to pursue something I have always wanted to pursue…..woodworking, wood carving, etc. Although I haven’t really built anything since high school, when I took Ark Building 101 taught by some dude named Noah, I did show some promise then and have always appreciated good woodworking. My wife gave me the Dremel 400 Series Rotary Tool w/planer & plunge router with her instructions still ringing in my ears. (“….go build something, just not a boat, ship, vessel, or any other flotation device that will require me to sleep in a bunk, cook on a moving stove, or go for days without even seeing terra firm!”) Yes Dear.

So here I stand before you, a few rusty tools from my boats, Dremel tool in hand, and no clue what to do. Some of my interests would be reproducing miniature lighthouses, ships & boats, trains, plaques, small boxes and chests, and maybe even trying my hand out in carving tobacco pipes.

Being retired and having a lot of time on my hands and since I haven’t left my property but two times since last 11 June, except in one of my boats, I am anxious to get started but I do need some direction and advice. And…I would be more than willing to trade some help and instruction for some cruising/fishing trips in the Pamlico River/Sound area. Now there is a win win proposition if I ever heard one.

Looking forward to participating in this site and hopefully learning something.

Welcome aboard:lol: My only advice to you is to read as much as you can the forum and look at the photo galleries. Then decide what you want to build first. I'm sure you'll get all the advice you need or want, probably more so:rolf:

Let me add my welcome to the group. That is quite an offer - hopefully you'll want to learn scroll saw stuff:lol: . Look through the photo gallery and add pictures of anything you have/will make. We are nuts about pictures (have been known to require them as proof - you'll see as you read posts:lol: !). I believe that every aspect is woodworking is represented by this group and everyone is very willing to share.

Read posts and jump in wherever you want. You will find a welcoming group and no question is considered too silly to ask. Add yourself to our member map and enjoy yourself!

Welcome to the site. Glad you finally landed. We'll be glad to have you along in our journey to make lots and lots of sawdust. Have you ever made a reproduction of a lighthouse? I think that would be a great idea. If you have, I'd love to see some pictures. Me and carving just don't get along.

Arrgh, me buckos and welcome sailor. You've picked a great area to drop anchor. I'm familiar with the area, you can always cruise over to Lowland or Hobucken for entertainment

I think you'll find this a great reference source in your quest for woodworking skills.

Welcome, if you are interested in miniture boat building you should talk to the webmaster Steve, it's rumored that he made quite a few. I have looked into carving tobacco pipes myself after getting a good stock of pipe briar...never got around to it. If you are interested I would be willing to let a hunk go to see what can be made out of it. I look forward to your input in the forums and hopefully "seeing" you around a bunch. Dave:)
