Hello,

Two weeks ago I joined and in the forum posted a request for assistance. This post has been moved to the appropriate forum and I have been given the opportunity to try again to introduce myself.

Personal:
I am a disabled veteran of the Vietnam conflict. This disablity is the result of Diabetes rather than combat. The VA and I are still in conflict as to whether or not it is service related due to "Agent Orange" exposure.

I have never been married and have no children, nor family that I know the location of. I have three brothers that are somewhere in America, but we have not been in contact since our parents died about ten years ago. I live in High Point in a high rise building for the disabled and elderly.

My means of transportation is a powered wheelchair, which gets to most places that I need to go and if I can not get there, or if the place that I want to go can not accept the wheelchair, I don't go.

Because I am "legally Blind" as well as in a wheelchair I use assistive devices and blind aids to assist me in doing everything from meeting the challenges of everyday living to maintaining an independant living lifestyle.

INTERESTS

My time is invested in a personal exercise regimen at the Y.M.C.A. in an attempt to maintain muscle tone in my lower extremities and reduce the collection of weight that the wheelchair has assisted in creating around my waistline.

I work with veterans in their attempts to get the benefits that their service has earned them and volunteer at the Durham VA Medical Center through the Blinded Veterans Association service organization of which I have been the secretary of the state organization for the last five years.

I am also very active in the church that I attend, a United Methodist Church. I coordinate a partnership with Angel Food Ministries to provide food the needy in the community around the church and through this ministry reach out to those in the community that need a resource to feed their spirits as well as their bodies.

HOBBIES

I do a lot of craft type things from leather, lapidary and artcraft to working with power tools when in an environmnet where they are available. I build models, compose music and I am teaching myself to play the piano. I also read a lot and watch movies. I would like to attend various community sponsored activities like arts festivals, plays, opera etc, but a lack of transportation prevents a lot of that. I like the mountains as well as the ocean and at home in either location.

AVOCATION

I hope someday to have a place of my own that is totally adapted to my needs and comes with a workroom that I can use for a woodshop to make puzzles, toys and craftkits that I can give to people that are bedfast or limited by disability and have only time on their hands. these crafts, toys and puzzles will give them something to do to occupy their time and feel useful while they are recovering or learnming to cope with their disabilities.

I am actively seeking someone with a kindred spirit that would like to become a life partner and do the driving so that I could effectively do the traveling that I would like to do and make the memories that give meaning to life.

I love children and work within the school system, as a volunteer tutor or listener for them to read to as they develop those learning skills. Most of these children come out of economically disadvantaged households and the efforts of myself and others may make the difference down the road as to whether they complete their education or drop out of school as soon as they are able to make that decision.

Motto:

Give me a pair of pliers, roll of duct tape and a roll of wire and I can resolve almost any challenge that I face. If I am not able to resolve it immediately, I will find another solution, although it might take a little longer.

Welcome again Charles, thank-you for the formal introduction. You lead a very impressive life, I could only hope to be half as good of a person as you sound. I don't live in the HIgh Point area, and can't help with the life partner search, but if you ever need anything that I can offer, please don't hesitate to ask. And I am still interested in your pen turning program. Thanks for sharing and I hope to "see" you around!!!

Dave:)
