Found this piece of old oak in a neighbors yard back in March. LOML has been working on me for a while to get a bowl turned from it because of the spalting and the woood coming from a fork on the tree.

What she didn't know, is that it was to be a Christmas gift. The Spalting is nice, but the grain from the fork running thru the middle of the bowl just really seems to set it off.

Nice job JRD, I like the spalting effect.:icon_thum Hopefully that piece of wood wasn't sitting in the middle of your neighbor's oak tree when you found it in his yard. That could cause him to get a little upset if he woke up and found the middle of his tree missing.

So that's what the cops were doing next door! Thanks for the compliment.

Mike

Thanks too. As for being a bit heavy, yea it is. Portions of the wood were so soft I was afraid to go too thin. Actually the wood turned out solid after I got down into it, but I didn't want to take a chance and ruin the whole thing.

That's really cool, I've never seen splated oak before. It's as dramatic or more than spalted maple. I like the form also, it looks like a user, not a sit on the shelf piece. Great job. Dave:)

Nice job JRD! The other folks are right, the thickness of it makes it more useable and less fragile than some I've seen. I continue to be amazed by turners.

That bowl is sharp! DL - we need that kind of input ahead of time (yes, you are supposed to read our minds).

Wow, that looks great. I wonder what I've got spalting out in the yard....hmmm. Now all I need is a lathe, tools and talent. Beautiful job and I agree with the "useability" of it. It's a beautiful piece to display and also feel comfortable pulling it down and using it.
Are there any issues using spalted wood for food applications? I know there have been a lot of cautions issued about the dust but I have no idea about the wood itself.

Steve,

I don't really know about the dangers of using spalted wood in contact with food items. I always play that one safe though.
Since spalting is a work of fungus, for my peace of mind, no food in spalted objects.
It could be argued, there is a layer of finish as a barrier between food and fungus, but why take a chance. Besides, covering up the wood with food keeps you from seeing the workmanship and grain of the bowl.
