I started turning about (3) years ago and for that entire time, my mom has been saying why do you turn me a bowl.

Well for Christmas I got a chuck and have been scratching out a bowl or two.

I turned this one for her last night, her birthday is tomorrow.

Here's the sanded bowl before I finished it.

Here's the finished bowl

You can't tell it in the pic very well but it has started to crack with the grain, I guess the wood wasn't as dry as I thought it was. The cracking hasn't gotten anyworse since it popped last night while was sanding.

My wife can barely see it, so I'm figuring with my mom's eyesight she'll never notice.:gar-La;

It really doesn't look too bad. I think she' be pleased. I'm really impressed with the looks of the marble wood. I'll be looking for more. I got this piece at Asheville Hardware a few weeks ago when we went to Asheville for our anniversary.

Yessir,

Beautiful work and wood! There is no substitute for hand made gifts and the joy they bring to family.

I know nothing about turning but if the wood's dry enough, have you thought of squeegeeing in a quick dry epoxy or acrylic, just to fill and maybe stabilize the crack? If it's really thin there are toughened CA glues that might perform the task.

That's just a thought, I know your mother will love whatever you make just because she's Mom. My mother has all sorts of things I've made for her and some pieces represent a previous level of skill that I'm now not entirely proud to have exhibited! She loves all of them regardless, as a gift of my time and talent, and that becomes what's important.

She was really pleased the checking hasn't gotten worse so I figure it'll look fine sitting on a shelf

Phil, she does look stunned. :gar-Bi The pop of the grain must have flipped her for a loop. :icon_thum

Nice work. Good form and a sharp looking piece of wood.
No doubt she'll treasure that for ever.
Mother has a pair of candlesticks I turned in high school back in '72.
I'd forgotten them but I assure you she hasn't.
They are laminated maple and walnut, and look much better as two candlesticks than a "pair"... but she isn't about to give them up.

You can see the checking in this shot. i think it will be fine just resulted in a not glassy smooth finish.
