A Bit More Than A Simple Turning

Splated maple vase. C&C welcomed.

I confess this has been on the shelf a few years awaiting some type of finishing scheme. First of all, the vase is two turnings, barrel and (now glued on) base, Approximately 4.5" at the mouth and 10" tall, 1/4 wall. IIRC, the wood is from maple that came from trees downed in Nashville TN ~10 years ago.

The finish is a fading, hand application of Hampshire Sheen Sky Blue and Midnight Blue tints. Next Tung Oil was applied to seal the tinted surface, particularly the unstained interior surfaces, one coat only. Note, tints do not go on mixed grained turnings evenly. Given that (lesson learned), I used the tints to add color to Target Coatings water based acrylic lacquer top coats spayed with a smallish Kobalt gravity feed sprayer. This even'ed (is that a word?) out the color somewhat. Buffed with the beal system's Tripoli and White Diamond and then Mother's Brazilian Carnauba Wax.

Stanley tape measure, a gift from a friend, for size comparison.

Thanks for looking.

Interesting coloration. I recently bought some packets of keda dyes to play around with because i'm too cheap to buy a full complement of transtint without actually having a goal in mind. Your result reminds of kintsugi in a way.

I'd also like to give that target coatings a try. Does anyone sell it locally or does it have to be ordered? Is it durable with one coat? It seems like a highly regarded finish, and I like trying new finishes.

C, availability near you would be a google question, IMHO. IIRC, there was distributor in Greenville NC when we lived there. Never bought from them. It is very easy to order online. My stock is a bit old (years) and this was a first use for my quart of satin lacquer. I applied 5-6 coats without ever cleaning the spray gun in between. Some coats were just a few minutes apart. Some several minutes. After curing over the Extravaganza weekend, I scuffed it out with 600 grit and polished.

I find all Target Coatings to be quite durable and clear as, well, water, when dry. In the can it is white (before tinting). PhilS turned me onto Target Coatings. I've used it as clear and pre-tinted (white) on other projects.

Hope that helps. Give them a call or check out their webpage.
