Alan in Little Washington

I met fellow North Carolina Woodworker, Terry Reilly, in Fayetteville today and followed him in my car with trailer to Paul Sutton's shop where three old men (I was the youngest by a lot at 58 :) ) wrestled the beast. We successfully (?!?!?!?) loaded Paul's Delta RC-51 20" planer onto my trailer. That thing is a REAL beast- I am still researching the weight, but it is somewhere between 850 and 1000+ lbs!!!!!! Our first attempt to load it using a very heavy-duty mover's hand truck resulted in the planer falling on its back. We decided to leave it like that. Using some of Paul's lumber we were able to lever it up enough so we could slide some 1X6s under it. We then hooked a come-along to the top of the planer and the front of the trailer and dragged the planer and wood sleepers onto the trailer until it was centered over the axle. It took a lot of work, but we were successful. The trip home to little Washington was uneventful. I am leaving the planer on the trailer until tomorrow when I will attempt to roll the trailer under my hoist, raise it upright, and maybe, depending on the strain on the cable, hoist it to my shop.

A big thanks to Terry for finding the deal and setting up the transaction. If I get it up to my shop I'll be able to align and test it to see if it is a keeper. If I keep it, I'll be selling my Delta DC-380 15" planer w/Shelix, so stand by.

A couple of final notes: Cost is classified (unless you have already talked to Terry), but CONSIDERABLY less than $1000!! (think slightly more than a Dewalt DW735 benchtop planer) :-D:-D:-D:-D:-D Paul was the original owner, so the machine is in good shape- more cosmetic shop rash than wear from use! It has 4 knife cutterhead and came with a spare set of knives. It has a 5 hp, single phase, main* motor which is plated at 21 amps so I should be able to use my existing 30 amp circuit. *it has motorized table height. And did I say IT IS HEAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alan,
That's definately a real keeper and a steal all rolled into one. Since you posted a pic of the suspect and mugg shots of the witnesses I guess there's only one thing left to say.
You Suck!

Alan, Looks good to me. Congrats on the purchase and it looks to be a definate keeper. The quality of cut that it gives may surprise you and negate the need to fit it with a shelex head. From what I saw yesterday, you should have no trouble at all getting the beast up and into your shop. My only concern would be the wench and cable strength. If they have the capacity and you are comfortable with that, go for it. It's going to be a great addition to your shop.

Wow, real ol' iron? The machine too! :-D

With a monster like that, you don't need a foundation in the workshop. Just attach the roof to it.

"think slightly more than a Dewalt DW735 benchtop"...
"more cosmetic shop rash than wear from use"...
....YOU SUCK! All 1000lbs of you.

Yes Alan - you are definitely sucking big time. Now don't forget to post the pix of how you hoist that sucker into your shop. And I sure hope you have a good rigger nearby! That thing looks like it might challenge the structural strength of your very impressively engineered hoist. Best of luck with it - I hope you have many years of pleasure from it ...

Congratulations Alan,

Now you've got to get get it up and in, and once thats done, you're going to have to think about reinforcing your floors:rolf:. When you built the shop, it started out as a hobby shop, now it's starting to become much more, maybe you can get the LOYL to start parking in the driveway and leave the downstairs for rough prep and storage:lol: ( don't you wish ?).

Good Luck,

Jimmy:)

Well Alan I am glad that you made it home safely and that you now have the bragging rights to the "beast." Realizing I "Might" have had something to do with this and that you now have the SOTY I have only one thing to say:

YOU SUCK-BIG TIME!
I was waiting to do that! Terry:eusa_clap:eusa_danc:icon_thum

Sounds like quite a find Alan. Please take photos of the vertical journey 8-O. I'd love to see the winch setup in action. Congrats on the new addition!
