Scored an older CT Midi dust extractor on FBMP for $50 this week. Seller said it worked but was very loud.
I went to check it out and sure enough it was a screamer. I bought it regardless because there was suction and a new hose is 3 times the cost.
I tossed in a fresh filter and bag from my CT Mini and when the sound persisted, I isolated the motor as much as possible. In doing so, I discovered quite a bit of drywall dust of the 2016 vintage.
I pulled the motor out to find that the impeller was clogged with dust between a couple of the vanes. I assume this was throwing the impeller out of balance and creating a significant suction loss. No telling how much damage was permanently done.
Regardless I popped the top cap off and cleaned out the vanes, ohm’d the motor and threw it back in.
Sound is significantly better, but I wouldn’t call it factory quiet either. It’s been rode hard and put up wet. Despite its hard life, I’m building a miter station right now, and this bugger is going to retire underneath - permanently servicing my Kapex.
I’ll probably swap out the motor for an OEM one when I get tired of hearing it, but for now its a sweet little $50 machine. Definitely going to get a fresh HEPA filter asap.
Tickled with this find and wanted to share the tip in case anyone had an obnoxiously loud extractor that just wont die.
