One way (pun intended) to sharpen a 40-40 bowl gouge is with a Oneway Vary-Grind jig plus the gauge from Ron Brown. This works fine but there are several setup steps required.

I had a Vari-Grind II that I was not using and decided to dedicate it to sharpening a 40-40 grind. The guide rod fit in its slot was a bit sloppy so I first added a couple layers of shrink tubing.

Due to the geometry of the Vari-Grind II, the projection must be 1-3/4 inches. The guide rod is adjusted to it highest position and here is the first trial fit.

The extension for the square tubing was 3-5/8" in my case. I made a 3-5/8" spacer out of some 1/2" Al angle and also added a 1-3/4 stop block.

The "standard" that I had was a bowl gouge sharpened using the Vari-Grind + Ron Brown gauge. I colored the end with a marker and gave it a go. This new setup followed the previous grind very well and I'm happy.

Modified the stop block by angling a corner and fastening with CA glue. Works “more better”.

Last bit was to add some storage for when the grinder is used for other tasks.

Corner chisel was useful for the square holes.

I have both the original Vari-Grind and the Vari-Grind 2, and I use both of them. I admit that I like the Vari-Grind 2 more than the original. Because the Vari-Grind 2 jig does not let the tool move from side to side on the CNB wheel, it appears to produce a more predictable and precise grind. I mostly use the Vari-Grind original for grinding new profiles. The Vari-Grind 2 is fast, accurate, and there is no chance of accidentally sweeping the tool being sharpened too far to the left or right and having the jig or tool damage the CBN wheel or the tool.

I like your use of an angle spacer. I have been using a wood spacer while setting up the various grind angles. I will switch over to angle stock once I have everything sorted out. Great idea.
