Ok next project up on the chopping block, whats your thoughts on this design? seemd pretty straight forward. Someome mentioned something about making the legs out of 45 deg miters instead of a solid lam glue up. I think that might work well on this one.

Anyways whats your Honest thought's? does it look like a young mans bed?

As usal no plans, but hey atleast this time I have a printed picture to look at instead of just the the one thats in my head.

Thanks

I think that looks like a fantastic bed for a young man! I am sure it will turn out great!

That's a very manly bed. The size of those posts will lend themselves to a 4-way miter glue up, nicely. What wood are you thinking of using???

Nice loooking bed. I would go with the mitered posts. Lots of end grain would show on glue-up that large!

Couple of questions:

1) ya'll think those are 5x5 posts? It seems to me 4x4 is to small and 6x6 may be a bit big? If I went with a 5x5 leg and a 3" top rail board 1" panel frames that would give a uniform measurement of an 1" between the legs, top rail and panel frame as I plan on using full 1" thick stock.

2) Can I do a hollow leg or will in still need to be wrapped around a square (whatever that dim is)?

3) I recall reading in a post where someone mentioned something about gluing up with epoxy and saw dust (no gaps), but I can find that post. I would like to give it a try with this next project.

As for wood I going to use American elm I cut earlier this spring. http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/woodworking/wood/2994-american.elm.html

It's been air drying for about 7 months, so I'll bring it in the shop, tarp it and blow 3 or 4 tank-fuls of kerosene through the stack to bring the MC down to around 8%

I'm going to try and book match the elm as much as possible on the pieces not hidden anyways.

Thanks

Jeff I think that bed will be great for your son:icon_thum I also think 5 x 5 would look proportional. I think this is the link your looking for :eusa_thin

I think they are 4x4 square actual. I would think a glue up of 45's would work nicely. Have to tune up and make lots of test cuts before using "good wood". As for epoxy, you can use it and saw dust, but bad joinery is still bad joinery. I have seen using a screwdriver like a burnishing tool to push over the edges and making it tighter.

The post are definitely larger than 4x4. I would even be tempted to say that they are 6x6. 6x6 really isn't that large when you look at it in person.

As for the epoxy, I personally wouldn't use it on this type of project. Its going to take a fairly large amount of glue. Just make straight cuts and everything will be ok.
