Found a nice little toy on that big auction site, complete with the requisit paint spatter! Overall it is in very good shape. I brushed a little surface rust off, no pitting, and need to square the iron. I would like some advice/recommendation. The tote is a little loose and the screw is bottomed out. How can I fix this short of replacing the tote? I may be able to find a couple brass washers to shim it with, but there is not much clearance.

Ed, nice acquisition. How deep is the screw head in the tote? Often the wood fibers will compress causing the tote to loosen up and the screw to be tightened more. If the head of the screw isn't flush with the top of the tote, you could add washers to build the screw head counter-bore back up and gain a little more tightening room on the screw threads.

you could add a little epoxy to the hole, I have done that as well. I made sure that the bottom half of the hole was plugged with so the glue would not fill the whole thing. filled the top up with epoxy let it set and then re-drilled my new depth. So far so good.

I had the same trouble on some of my old users and fixed them with a thin brass washer that needed reaming out a little, but it works. If you've never used a #3, you'll like it.

Thanks for the advise guys. I think I'll see about shortening the rod a little. Roger, thanks for bringing up the nut. I've used that little trick quite a few times and it always helps clearing the threads.

Stan, now that you mention it I don't think I've ever bought a used plane that didn't have paint spatters on it. Maybe we need to do some scientific investigating here. Could be as a plane ages they get spots like older people. More here than meets the eye.:eusa_thin

I always thought paint spatters were required on planes. If you ever buy the LN or LV planes the first thing the instructions say is "take your new plane to the shop and, using a brush dipped in paint, spatter paint on your new plane. This will greatly add to the performance of the plane.":rolf:
