I would like to run my new 220 Volt table saw off of my dryer receptacle ( I did it that way in Michigan). What's up with this 4 stab receptacle? My extension cord from up North has a typical 3 stab male plug. Does NC require 2 grounds?

My understanding is many new dryers have 120 volt controls which means a current carrying neutral is required plus a safety ground. You could hook your table saw to the two hots plus the ground

It is so easy to add a 20A 240V breaker and the correct wire, so why not just do it right?

All dryers use 120 v controls and motor. No longer is the ground allowed to be used as neutral. Been this way in mobile homes for MANY years. When I built my last house (1992) if you use SE cable, then ground could serve as neutral also, but if you used Romex, then they had to be two separate wires.

Actually, it was the other way around. The neutral used to be allowed to be the equipment ground on dryer and range circuits.

Your 220V tool doesn't need a neutral, as pointed out.
