1PH vs 3PH

I really doubt you have three phase power in your shop unless you have a phase converter. If you take the cover off your breaker box, do you have three bars for breakers or two? If you don't have three, you do not have three phase power. If you have three phase motors, you either have capacitors creating a false third leg, a phase converter, or a variable frequency drive creating true three phase power (by going to DC first).

Charley, if you think I've said something in error please point out what. I am a retired ME but I am pretty sure I understand house wiring. In one of my former positions I managed to show the EEs some things they were not doing right. So I have some history.

I am not trying to contradict FlyingRon but I think his description of different legs of generated power as different power sources is a little hard to follow. I agree with his comments and I think his posts are good and sound.
