My in laws want me to make a sign for their place at the beach. What kind of wood would you suggest? This will be outside, salt air, probably no sun as it will be under an alcove.
Thanks in advance.
Last week my neighbor came asking for a sign for his new beach house. As the story goes, he's been "planning" on getting a beach house for years but never made the final decision. Now that he has, everyone in his family has one reaction .... "It's about time!" ... so he requested that I create...

Why does this site loose my user name and password? I have it checked on "remember me". But about every two weeks or so (I visit much more often than that) when I open up the site it has not remembered me and I have to type in my user name and password.

:D Hi All, I'm giving it a shot at timber framing. Just making my sign post for now and we'll see how that goes. 8) For my first attempt I'm using a 8x8 syp for the post.
I have been commissioned to design and build a new two-sided exterior sign for my church. I have a design but now need advice as to the materials to use for durability and longevity, as well as techniques for construction. Right now I'm thinking that the lettering will be routed out of the...
As some of you know I'm part owner of a small (13 people) software firm in Charlotte. We are in the process of moving to a new office and I had an idea ... wouldn't it be cool to have a 3D sign made with our company name & logo. But I don't have a CNC and don't really want a hand-carved look...
These are my first "non-test" Free Hand Routed Raised Letter signs. I did them with a $9.99 1/4" Trim Router using a 12" x 12" plexi base (see Misc album for photo). They are 24" x 16" and will be mounted back to back between two 4x4 posts. I still have a lot of practice to get good but I am...
This is an instrument in-process. The body is made of a Purpleheart core with alternating layers of maple and purplerheart venner with a flame maple top and a walnut back. It's going to be nice if I ever finish it!!
This is a closeup of the body after finishing with the electronics installed. I used a hand rubbed Tru-Oil finish and it really brought out the beauty of the mahogany. Not as durable as lacquer but pretty darn nice looking if I do say so myself!
This is the unfinished headstock. I used a Honduras mahogany core with a single Purpleheart veneer for the face and a Purpleheart/Maple/Purpleheart veneer sandwich for the rear.
