Steve Good design uses 1/4 inch material for the scroll work and I used 3/4 inch walnut for the frame.

At my local Lowe's I can get a 10% discount by showing my retired Navy ID. The discount is not posted or advertized anywhere....you need to ask for it and be prepared to wait while an "authorized person" puts in a code. I do not know if this is a corporate policy or a local program! My guess is...

I was commisioned (by my wife) to build the shadow box in the photo for my BIL's retirementd from the Navy (20+-years, full Commander..) next month.
The box is all white oak, a light golden oak stain and poly.
The layout of the medal etc was done by the wife following a sketch from the BIL.
Decided to do away with the typical brass plaque and go with laser etching.. the base framing shop does an excellent job, however they can only handle 26" wide items. so i cut it into 3 pieces etched it then reglued it, the piece came out pretty good though...
this is the final result, a lot of late nights after work... we had the retirement ceremoy today and Mac as well as everyone else were very pleased with the results. In case you were wondering, i have about $125.00 in materials alone
I needed a better way of mounting the barrel, i thought the barrel would get lost against the blue velvet. originally we wanted to chrome the barrel ($150.00 and 4 week turn-time canned that idea)
