Lever Cap, How Tight?

This might be a simple question, but what is a good rule of thumb for how tight the lever cap should be. I am at the beginning of the learning curve with hand tools and I am sure this has a simple ianswer. Any advice here would be appreciated. Let me ad that, wow what a difference a decent...

Block plane lever cap.....

Question, does anyone have a good understanding of how a lever cap works with a block plane? Specificially, as its upwards of 1/4" from the bevel, I'd guess its not playing the same critical role the chip breaker would on say, a jack plane. So, is a tight fit as necessary? Do shaving get...
