Getting ready for my 1st Furniture project (Sofa Table). Wife said no more Toys the grandsons room is full. Since this will be my first try at making furniture I don't really want to get to expensive wood. For the toys I've been getting everything at Lowes.

Cut today. 16" to 18" in diameter at base. 56" circumference. 40' in length to where the top was lost in an ice storm. It is still probably 6 to 8" in diameter at the top. Nice & straight. There is some rot in the center at the base (see picture), but I haven't cut on up to see where...

Been searching around the Triad for steel supplier that would be a good source for steel to make scrapers and one place has told me that D2 steel would work OK for that purpose.
So, my knowledge of metal types is limited, thus the question... would a 3/8 x 1 piece of D2 flat make a good...
I was working on a redheart flute ...don't really like this wood. It has a chalky smell to it. Exterior of the flute turned well...Anyhow on one end it isn't smooth and has some real dips and uneven places for about 3" inside. I tried sanding it smooth and it helped but the walls on this flute...
