Wood Glue Solution

Hello, I have a couple of wooden dining room chairs that keep coming apart. I can wedge the pieces back into the holes, but they don't stay for very long. A friend of mine said all I needed was some wood glue. Is this true and if so, do I need to put any weights on it or keep it upside down...
