Fred, thank you for sharing. The board is beautiful! Although you may not be a "Geek" you are a craftsman. Are you a chess player?

Looks great! I haven't tried a chess board yet but I have cherry and maple scraps... I do not have a drum sander. Probably can be made without it.

you can do it without a drum sander. use the planer for most of it. you do need to let the glue dry much longer before planning. splines ,biscuits or dominos help with alignment. I don't use any only because I have the sander to flatten.

Since you're not end grain pieces, I assume you could send it through a planer if the grain was oriented all the same? really light cuts, of course...

I've got plenty of Walnut and Maple but might go with Bubinga and Maple for a checker board too. Great tute - thanks!

planer would work for the board but not after adding the sides and wrap. cross grain may cause soiled shorts. ;) You would have to give the glue some extra time. (slightly more than the 20 minutes that I do. a couple hours I would guess.

Understood. And not a problem. I might even elevate the checkered board and let the end panels sit a little lower - maybe add a little edging to keep the pieces from coming off the board too. You've got me thinking on this one! Thanks again...
